Maxwell's Focus on Healthcare

Why do you focus on healthcare?

The answer is simple. We love it.

Giving Back

Healthcare has been an ever present force in my life. To begin with, it is what brought my parents together. Had my parents not met during medical school when he was working as a teaching assistant, I might not be here. You can also say I have seen my fair share of hospitals and clinics. I literally traveled in-utero through hospital halls as my Mom finished her residency, and later as a kid visited my Mom at the hospital, and went with my Dad to check on patients over the weekend. To top it all up, my house was often a Dr.'s office of sorts, with family and friends stopping by to see my Mom about a sore throat, or my Dad about the knee that was bothering them.

It is no exaggeration to say that I owe food in my mouth, a roof over my head, and my education as child to the healthcare profession. While I never had a desire to be a clinician, I love healthcare and the type of people it attracts; good, smart, mission-driven-people that sincerely care for helping others.

My co-founder Stephen Enke is also a product of a healthcare family - in fact several of his siblings and Dad still work in the industry. Now given that he is a good, smart, mission-driven-person, he actually made it all the way through his senior year of college as pre-med. He decided not to pursue this field, but just like me he loves healthcare.

Healthcare is Hurting

Unfortunately healthcare is hurting. In a previous blog post we took a deeper look at the problems in healthcare and what can be done. The long and short is that working in healthcare is harder than ever.

Today, I took my daughters to their annual check with their pediatrician. I reflected on how extremely blessed we are in the level of care they receive. Not only is our pediatrician outstanding at his job, and a completely human delight, but we have been seeing him for fourteen years. He was there soon after they were born, has seen them for annual check ups, for minor illnesses, and for concerning circumstances like when my five week-old newborn and I felt down a flight of stairs. He knows my kids and that results in better care for them.

Having this level of continuity of care is becoming an anomaly.

The Healthcare Providers of the Future

My twelve-year old wants to be a pediatric surgeon. Her eyes lit-up as she asked our pediatrician today if it is true that some people have their heart on the right side. He patiently explained that it is true and how it actually happens. When she had to get a brain MRI earlier this year, she was excited to see the images of how she looks inside and asking her Abuelos (my parents) to tell her what parts of the brain they could see, and what each of them do.

She is a smart, good, mission-driven girl, that cares about helping others. Working in healthcare could be a great fit, if we can make the employee experience better. I worry about her and they many others just like her that want to help others, going into a profession with a high-levels of strees and burnout.
